Overview:

Lake Duluti, a deep volcanic lake, has long been a sacred place for the Meru people and their ancestors and today, people come to the rocky cliffs around the lake to pray and make offerings. The lake is surrounded and protected by a forest reserve, home to a diversity of plants and animals. Join us for a 3-hour guided walking safari of the tropical forest as we circle the lake, stopping to see where people worship, and watching for the playful blue monkeys, beautiful water birds, and the elusive monitor lizards. The walk ends at a local restaurant overlooking the lake where we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch and refreshing drinks.

Overview:

The Maasai, with their colorful blankets, beaded jewelry and fierce warriors, are perhaps the most well-known of Tanzania’s many tribes. Join us for a walking safari in Maasai homelands west of Arusha to learn how these traditional pastoralists are adapting to a changing world. We’ll be greeted by your Maasai guide, who will introduce you to Maasai culture and lead you on walking safari through their community. You’ll visit several bomas (households), meet Maasai men and women, and learn about their cultural traditions and the important role that livestock plays in their daily lives.

Overview:

Explore the winding roads of Nguruma Village with your expert guide and discover how the Meru people make their living as small scale farmers on the slopes of Mt. Meru. The first stop is the busy, bustling Soko la Ndizi – the banana market – where women from the village come to sell bananas and other vegetables. Then, you’ll visit a local family and learn about their daily lives as they show you around their farm. The tour continues through the village, winding along shady pathways past bananas, maize and beans, coffee, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. You’ll have a chance to practice your Swahili with folks you meet along the way and sample the local banana beer before returning to The Vijiji Center for lunch.

The Meru people of Nguruma Village have been growing coffee on the slopes of Mt. Meru for more than 100 years. Come, visit the fields of our local coffee-growers, and learn about the origins of coffee, how to plant and harvest it, and what it takes to get coffee from “bean to cup”. Then, return to The Vijiji Center and roast your own coffee from fresh, local beans and enjoy the fruits of your labour along with a delicious traditional meal prepared by The Vijiji Center.

The village of Sing’isi, just 15 km east of Arusha, has a long history of producing beautiful handmade pottery. Join us on a visit to a pottery workshop and watch the artisans at work. You’ll learn how clay is collected and prepared, discover the different techniques for making and decorating the earthenware pottery, and see the kiln where the pieces are fired. If you’d like, you can try your hand at making your own piece under the supervision of an expert potter. After your visit, you’ll return to The Vijiji Center for a delicious lunch.
