Backroads and Bananas
Explore the winding roads of Nguruma Village with your expert guide and discover how the Meru people make their living as small scale farmers on the slopes of Mt. Meru.
The first stop is the busy, bustling Soko la Ndizi – the banana market – where women from the village come to sell bananas and other vegetables. Then, you’ll visit a local family and learn about their daily lives as they show you around their farm. The tour continues through the village, winding along shady pathways past bananas, maize and beans, coffee, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. You’ll have a chance to practice your Swahili with folks you meet along the way and sample the local banana beer before returning to The Vijiji Center for lunch.
